From our hearts to yours.
In their hearts humans plan their course, but the Lord establishes their steps.
Proverbs 16:9
The month of May always seems to be a month of transitions. Kids graduating, weddings, vacations, new home projects, gardens, and new babies. Spring is a time of new beginnings – right? I don’t know about you – but we love to plan ahead! We love to anticipate the fun and all the preparations. We try to correctly forecast our future.
But what happens when plans change? What happens when our forecast alters? How do we treat each other when our hearts are disappointed because of uncertainty? A job changes unexpectedly, causing financial insecurity; do we find fault with one another and play the blame game? Our expectations can cause wild discontent when they are not met as intended.
Transitions, whether they are positive or negative, come to each life and marriage by the hand of God. There is an old saying that “God loves you just the way you are today - - - but much too much to let you stay that way.” As a couple we need to encourage one another’s hearts no matter what twisty path life gives us. Change, transition, is a gracious uncertainty from the hand of God.
Oswald Chambers from My Utmost for His Highest devotional says - “when we have the right relationship with God, life is full of spontaneous, joyful uncertainty and expectancy. - Leave everything to Him and it will be gloriously and graciously uncertain how He will come in– but you can be certain that He will come. Remain faithful to Him.
In May – or any time we are making plans, let us remind each other God is directing our steps – AND He is walking with us. Keeping our marriage and lives aligned with Him, we will be better and stronger as a result.
